To CPAP or Not to CPAP, That is the Question

Week 4 post 1

Do you have sleep apnea? One of the only treatments of sleep apnea is CPAP therapy. So, to CPAP or not to CPAP, is that even a question? CPAP therapy has shown time and time again that the benefits can greatly help disruption in sleep due to sleep apnea. Medi-Rents is a supporter of sleep apnea treatment through CPAP therapy and we have a lot to offer in this category.

The benefits of CPAP therapy:

  • CPAP therapy has been shown to provide users with a better night’s sleep. Sleep apnea therapy significantly helps breathing patterns throughout the night because of the continuous airflow.
  • Studies have shown that CPAP therapy may reduce the risk of fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events like heart attacks. This also significantly reduces problems associated with heart disease.
  • Within days of starting CPAP therapy, blood pressure can dramatically reduce. The average reduction in blood pressure caused by sleep apnea is equivalent to a hypertension prescription’s effects.
  • CPAP therapy has been seen to help those with diabetes because it improves insulin sensitivity and glucose levels. After three months of therapy, patients with type 2 diabetes saw a reduction in glucose.

CPAP therapy has many obvious benefits besides regulating sleep patterns and breathing through the night. Medi-Rents has sleep specialists and respiratory therapists on our staff that are willing and able to help you through your CPAP therapy journey. We provide same day delivery of sleep apnea equipment in as little as three hours of your order. We strive to provide our customers with the quality service and products we know you deserve.

Medi-Rents wants to let you know the importance of consistently wearing your CPAP device throughout the night. It is important to wear the device at least 70% of the time, or at minimum, 4 nights per week. The more you wear the device, the better you will sleep. Contact us today if you have any questions about our CPAP therapy devices or any other products.

Finding the Perfect Fit

If you’ve had your sleep apnea diagnosed and have begun CPAP therapy any time recently, you know that it’s not the most comfortable thing in the world. Air is continually being pumped into airway, you’re wearing a mask and there are straps pressing into the back and sides of your head. Needless to say, it’s not the most comfortable thing you’ve ever experienced.

Successful CPAP therapy is determined by your comfort level with your mask.

However, there is one part of this equation that can make a world of difference in your comfort level, and thus the efficiency of your therapy: finding the perfect CPAP mask. Everyone has a different preference when it comes to a nasal or full-face mask based on how they normally breathe at night, but that can change when CPAP therapy is introduced.

A full-face mask can seem like a good option to start, but can bring with it feelings of claustrophobia since the mouth and nose are both covered. Nasal masks can help alleviate the claustrophobia, however they depend on the user breathing only through their nose. Even nasal masks that are minimal contact masks can cause contact sores. So, how do you find a mask that’s right for you?

First, recognize that you may have to try a few masks out first before you settle on one. Second, no whether you are a mouth or nose breather, or both. Once you have these two things determined, choose a mask suiting your breathing style from the large selection Medi-Rents offers.

You can try getting used to the mask by wearing it while reading or watching television before bed. Any mask will uncomfortable at first, but stick with it! If after a few weeks you find yourself becoming more comfortable with it and feeling less anxious about using it, you’ve found the one. If not, try the same process with a different mask.

Medi-Rents is proud to offer a large variety of masks, as well as other CPAP equipment to help you with your sleep apnea treatment. Give us a call or stop by our store today!
