Busy-MonthThere are a lot of things going on in the short month of February.

Medi-Rents and Sales in the Mid-Atlantic area is interested in your health and your life. There are many things happening this month that we want to bring to your attention.

February is National Cancer Prevention Month. While there are many months that focus on certain types of cancers, February looks at the prevention of all cancers. There are many behaviors and common links to many of the most common cancers. February is the month to look at many of the behaviors and common links between cancers and the wide spread effects of cancer.

February is American Heart Month. Heart disease and heart-related conditions are the leading killer of men and women in the United States. Heart/Cardiovascular disease costs the United States $312.6 billion each year!

National Wear Red for Women Day is also in February. Did you know that 1 in 4 women will die from heart disease in the United States?  Some of the biggest risk factors for heart disease include smoking and secondhand smoke, having a diet that is high in bad fats, untreated high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes, and plaque build-up that causes blood vessel inflammation.

National Random Act of Kindness Day is February 22nd. What random acts of kindness can you do for a person on this day? You could pay for the food or coffee for the person behind you in line or consider sending a gift card to someone who is having a bad time right now. Consider sending a thank-you note to a former teacher or thanking them for what they taught you.  The possibilities are endless! These random acts of kindness bless the person who receives them, but they also are good for the givers heart and spirit.

Staying Healthy through the Holidays Part 2

Posted on: December 19th, 2013 by Medi-RentsBlogger

Medi-Rents & Sales loves the holidays and we are talking about ways for you to have fun and stay healthy so you can enjoy 2014.  Here are some more tips from us to you!

Holiday Health 2

Keep up with your regular health and diet regimens. If you walk, work out, or swim the rest of the year, keep doing it. It’s easy to let all of the excitement of the holidays take over and let our exercise slide. Allow for a little more time before or after a gathering to walk or whatever you normally do. You’ll feel better in the long run.

Holiday parties can be diet
nightmare! Trays of homemade goodies, eggnog or a steaming pot of appetizers? Yes please; but in moderation. It’s easy to overdo it, so practice saying “It all looks so good, but no thank you.” Keep a glass of something in your hand or a small plate of something with you so they host doesn’t think you look hungry and underserved.

Remember that you are there for the people, not just the food. The more you are talking to people, the less time you have to eat. Don’t stand near the food, it’s too much temptation. Find a spot where the people are far away from the food and strike up a conversation.

Booze and medication do not mix. Just because it’s the holidays and you’re at a party does not mean that that you should over do the bubbly. Many medications mixed with alcohol can make you sleepy, dizzy or quite sick. If you are diabetic, alcohol can really mess up your blood sugars. Keep water, juice, cider or a sugar free soda with you to avoid temptation.

Don’t forget to have fun! Sometimes the best thing you can do for your health is to be with people. See Medi-Rents & Sales for you diabetic glucose monitors, enteral nutrition supplies, and bath safety needs.

Staying Healthy through the Holidays Part 1

Posted on: December 17th, 2013 by Medi-RentsBlogger

Healthy HolidaysThis year is quickly coming to a close and the holidays are in full swing. Parties, food, gifts and more food are everywhere and sometimes all of that celebrating can have a bad effect on our health, especially if we have health issues already.

Medi-Rents & Sales loves the holidays as much as anybody, but we want all of you to stay healthy and wise this season and for a long time to come. Here are some tips from us to you!

If you’re visiting the homes of other people this year, be extra careful if you have mobility issues or balance problems. While you may be used to the floors, carpets and layout of your home, the home you are visiting may be very different.

Be careful of wet and snowy sidewalks and entryways. If you use a cane or walker at home, use it everywhere you go.

Be careful with long coats, dresses or even scarves that can get tangled or cause a tripping hazard. If there are a lot of people, children or pets at a gathering, the smarting thing you can do is to find a good place to sit in the middle of the action and stay put. Let the mingling come to you.

Beware of the buffet table. If you are on a special medical diet of any kind, it’s easy to be tempted to sneak a little bit of this or that. Know your limits. Eat at home before you go to the party. Whether you use enteral feeding, food with lower carbs, or a gluten-free diet, eating before will help you fight the urge to graze and prevent you from paying for it later.
